What are the different types of Sleep Tests?

The main 3 types of sleep testing are categorized in levels such as Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 Sleep Diagnostics.

Level 1 Sleep Testing

Is a Full Polysomnography performed in the hospital or facility that has registered sleep technicians setting you up, monitoring you, scoring your test and potentially providing therapy at the time of testing if clinically indicated.

Level 2 Sleep Testing

Is a partial Polysomnography performed in the comfort of your own home. It can detect nearly everything the Level 1 test can for a proper diagnosis of sleep apnea or sleep disorder.

Level 3 Sleep Testing

Is a Home Diagnostics tool that is widely used for diagnostics as they are easily accessible, cheaper and obtain all the signals required for potential diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea and treatment recommendation.

Which Sleep Test is right for me?

All levels of sleep test will be able to detect obstructive sleep apnea through the Respiratory efforts, Heart Rate/ Oxygen, Positional sensors and airflow/ vibratory sensors. Level 3 Home Sleep tests are readily accessible, are more cost effective and provide more than enough information to determine the severity of obstructive sleep apnea, which is the majority of the issues we are looking for.

In addition to the abilities of the Level 3 Home Sleep Tests, the Level 2 Home Polysomnography allows detection of limb movements, ECG/EKG/EMG/EOG/EEG paradoxical breathing and has a microphone for detection of sleep talking/snoring.

Level 1 Polysomnography has 18 EEG sensors vs. 1-2, and include ALL other sensors that are monitored live by a Sleep Technician. If there is PTSD, severe cardiac issues and Respiratory illnesses, it may be best to go through the PSG at the hospital.

Home Sleep Tests are a great affordable option for quickly detecting and treating (if clinically recommended) sleep apnea to better one’s health.

Do you…

  • Wake up throughout the night?
  • Have Bathroom Breaks? (Did you know it is not normal to start waking up throughout the night as we age?)
  • Have Diabetes?
  • Have High Blood Pressure?
  • Have Restless Sleep?
  • Have chronic fatigue?
  • Does your energy plummet in the early afternoon?
  • Take naps?
  • Snore?

If you’ve answered yes to 3 or more of these questions, you may want to consider talking to your physician about a Sleep Test,

either in Hospital or at your own home.

Home Sleep Apnea Testing is open to the public without a referral. We always recommend family physicians to be part of your health plan. To ensure that is available, we have provided a Referral Link . Simply download the form, bring it to your physician and it can either be faxed or uploaded online under "upload a file" or online during the medical intake form!

Is the Sleep Test covered through OHIP?

At this time, Home Sleep Apnea Testing provides a private route for quick, early diagnosis & treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.

What treatment can I get if I test positive?

We go through a thorough medical history intake that assists us and the physicians to better understand the nature of the issue and tackle whatever it is straight on with a few different options. CPAP Therapy remains the Golden Standard that naturally should be looked at. However, we have other sleep and sleep apnea aids and will assess each individual case by case for the best therapy available.

Is CPAP Covered in Ontario with a Level 3 Home Sleep Test?

With over a decade of Insurance experience, we will work with you & your family doctor to help get your therapy covered. Coverage is subject to the specific plan.

The COVID supply crunch has placed a lot of pressure on CPAP machines that are ADP-Approved leading to months of delay and added unneeded rental expenses. Additionally, line items that are ineligible insurance expenses such as Professional Fees and Monitoring Fees are being added to the ADP-funded machine bill due to an overall reduction in Government coverage, now totaling $415.50. Unfortunately, due to the new price breakdown and reduction of the dollar amount in coverage by the Ministry of Health, private insurance holders are getting significantly less coverage for ADP-funded machines resulting in the patients assuming more of the cost.

Through the Private route of Home Sleep Testing, we assist with, if clinically applicable, the purchase of a CPAP machine, insurance navigation, gather necessary documents, and assist from beginning to end with the entire process. Some insurers will partially cover CPAP machines, others will only cover accessories for the CPAP package. Our team will educate you on your insurance coverage and how to properly submit claims for approval and maximum coverage.
