YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
WHAT THERAPIES ARE THERE FOR SLEEP APNEA?
CPAP therapy: The golden standard for treatment of sleep apnea. CPAP machines have come a long way since the 1980s and are now quiet, portable and esthetically pleasing. With new generations of smaller masks, and the assistance of a Registered Respiratory Therapist, it has never been so easy to get used to CPAP therapy.
Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT): has also been around for several years. This device is obtained through a dentist that specializes in sleep medicine and is usually a secondary consideration for treatment of sleep apnea for insurance providers. The desntist will set the mandible readjustment device to pull the bottom jaw forward creating a bigger opening in the airway during sleep.
Positional Therapy: generally for snoring cessation or mild sleep apnea associated with positional effects.
Surgery: In some cases surgeries can be recommended although there is a very low success rate at treating sleep apnea without need for more intervention. Also be ready for 2 weeks of pain while you heal from the removal of tissues from your throat and/or nose.

DO I NEED A PRESCRIPTION FOR OXYGEN THERAPY?
Believe it or not Oxygen is a drug. The air we breathe is made up of 20-21% oxygen and 79-80% nitrogen. Higher concentrations of oxygen for prolonged periods of time can have adverse effects such as oxygen toxicity and lung scarring due to increased free oxygen radicals. Therefore it is in the best practice to obtain an oxygen thearpy for your MAIN oxygen therapy equipment. You do not require a prescription for Portable Oxygen Concentrators as that is for ambulation only and never should be used as a main oxygen therapy device.
